For teens & adults · Practice for yourself

What is video self-modeling?

A way to hear yourself in a conversation before you try it out in the world.

If you live with selective mutism, you may have plenty to say even when speaking feels out of reach. This space is for you—not a guide for someone to get you talking. You choose what to practice, when to start, and when to stop.

You are the model—not someone else.

Video self-modeling (VSM) means watching a recording that shows you successfully doing a skill you are practicing. Rather than only watching another person demonstrate, you see or hear yourself taking part.

On Brave Voice Journey, you record your own voice and combine it with a filmed practice conversation. The person on screen is part of the scene; the responses you hear are yours. It is a rehearsal, not a recording of an interaction that already happened.

The aim is to make a chosen exchange more familiar. Practicing on a screen and speaking in person are different experiences; a recording does not mean you should suddenly be able to do the same thing everywhere.

One conversation. Your pace.

  1. Choose a moment that matters to you

Browse Teen / Adult Practice after signup. Pick a conversation you would like to rehearse—not the hardest one, and not one someone else thinks you should be ready for.

  2. Record your voice at your own pace

Follow the prompts and record your responses somewhere you feel comfortable. The site combines your voice with the practice scene. You do not need to film yourself or perform in front of another person.

  3. Watch your conversation back

Hear your own voice taking part in the exchange. Replay it when you want to. There is no deadline to turn the recording into a real-life conversation.

What would you like to feel more ready for?

Maybe it is placing an order, asking a question in class, or speaking to someone at work. Use the available scenes to find a starting point that feels relevant to your life. You do not have to start with a whole conversation.

Opening a preview can be enough for today. Your goal is not to sound perfect or become a different person.

What if recording feels hard, too?

You can browse first and leave recording for another day. You do not owe the app a response. If you want support, you can involve someone you trust while keeping the choices yours.

If you already work with a therapist, consider showing them the scene you want to practice. Together you can decide whether it fits your goals.

A practice tool, not a promise or a test

Brave Voice Journey is a wellness and practice platform, not a diagnosis or a substitute for individualized care. We do not promise that using it will treat selective mutism or that progress will happen on a particular schedule.

The Selective Mutism Association describes self-modeling as one approach used in treatment. Its overview discusses children; it should not be read as proof that this app works for teens or adults. Read the SMA overview.
