Brave Voice Journey
Parent tools for understanding, practicing, and building brave voice moments at home.
Your child talks at home. Here's how to help that voice travel —start with a free 3-minute snapshot.
Selective mutism is not shyness. It is anxiety — and it needs practice, not pressure. BraveVoiceJourney gives parents three tools — two free, one subscription — to understand, practice, and build their child's speaking confidence. Starting tonight, at home.

Start by seeing the full picture, then move into brave ladder practice and video self-modeling at home.

Every child with SM has a different anxiety profile. Some freeze at school but order ice cream without hesitation. Others do fine one-on-one but shut down in groups.
The Voice Map shows you the full picture — 25 real situations, rated in plain language, visualized as a chart your child's therapist will actually find useful.
No account needed to start. Save your results to track progress and return in 90 days to see what's changed.

Step 2 — Free with account
Practice the brave moments before they have to happen.
Knowing where your child's anxiety is highest is the first step. The Brave Ladder is what you do about it.
Pick a real situation your child faces — ordering food, saying hi to a classmate, talking to a teacher. The Brave Ladder walks you through a structured practice approach, one small step at a time, in the places where it actually matters.
Free for any parent with a BraveVoiceJourney account. No subscription needed.

Non-verbal steps that count — pointing, nodding, and whispering are real rungs

Step 3 — Subscription
The research-backed video practice tool.
Video self-modeling has a 30+ year research base. BraveVoiceJourney makes it accessible for families to use at home — no video editing skills needed.
Pick a moment.
Choose a real-world scenario where your child wants to speak more freely — ordering at a counter, answering a teacher, saying their name.
Record their voice.
At home, where they're comfortable, you record them saying the words. We edit your recording together with the scenario video.
Watch it back.
Your child watches a short video of themselves doing the thing they thought they couldn't. Saving and rewatching builds familiarity — the successful moment starts to feel normal before it ever happens in real life for the speaking version of the moment.

Selective mutism is not defiance. It is not stubbornness. It is anxiety, and it needs repeated, supported practice in the direction of brave moments.
SM does not reliably go away on its own — but with the right practice, children make real progress.
If you're still trying to figure out whether you're seeing temperament, anxiety, or something in between, start with our guide to whether your child is just shy or something more. If that home-versus-school contrast is exactly what you're seeing, start with our guide to why some kids talk at home but freeze at school.
The brave voice is already in there. These tools help it find its way out.

FAQ
Common questions
Do I need to start with the Voice Map?
You don't have to, but most parents find it useful. The Voice Map gives you a clear picture of where your child is today — which makes the Brave Ladder and video practice more targeted. It takes about 3 minutes and it's free. You can always start there and move at your own pace.
Do I need a diagnosis to use these tools?
No. The Voice Map and Brave Ladder are available to any parent who wants to understand and support their child's speaking anxiety. If your child hasn't been evaluated yet and you suspect Selective Mutism, we strongly recommend connecting with a specialist. The Selective Mutism Association maintains a therapist directory at selectivemutism.org. BraveVoiceJourney works best alongside professional support, not instead of it.
What ages does this work for?
Most users are between 3 and 10, but we've seen older kids, teens, and young adults benefit. Younger kids might need a parent watching with them; older kids and teens often want to watch alone.
What if it doesn't work for my child?
Not every kid responds the same way, or in the same timeframe. If you've used Brave Voice Journey for 30 days and you don't see any change, email Bob directly and he'll refund your subscription. No forms, no script.
Is my child's video private?
Yes. Recorded videos are stored privately to your account. They are never used to train AI, never shared with anyone else, and you can delete any video at any time. Clinicians using the desktop app keep all recordings local on their clinic device.
Can clinicians use this with their patients?
Yes — and most clinicians get more value out of the free desktop app than the family web version. The desktop app keeps all recordings local to your clinic computer (HIPAA-compliant), with no cloud storage. Clinician access →
